Foal Dreams: An Interview with Foal
After the success of our first interview, I wanted to interview Foal and the Angels author Foal again. This interview is all about the importance of dreams, listening to what we are being told, and how we can learn from our subconscious. Listen, learn and become open-minded with Foal.
Dreams are more than simply important, they are actually essential to our well being, to life itself ! And now, we know for certain from scientific experiments that, if deprived of dreaming, human beings will become neurotic or will start showing very disturbing behaviors. So, you see, even if we don`t remember our dreams, we still do need to dream in order to keep our mental and emotional balance. We cannot live without sleep, or without dreams.
Q) What is the most important thing a dream has explained to you?
Emotionally and spiritually speaking, it’s difficult to choose one since there are more than I could tell. It’s a bit like having a wise man (or a jester sometimes!) by your side who is not explaining things to you in a didactic and pedantic way, but rather showing you what would happen `IF`, and so you can spontaneously make your decision on your own.
Q) Is there one dream that really stands out above all others?
YES! There is ONE BIG DREAM that stands out above the others. Three years ago I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, or rather, the dreams diagnosed me first, and they strongly ( i.e., nightmarishly!! LOL!) recommended me to have a check up. Even when doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with me and were telling me to come back in a year or so, the dreams kept pushing me till I went for a second and third opinion, and then we finally found it. So thanks to my dreams, the cancer was found at the very beginning, stage A, level 1. If I had waited a year or more as I had been told, I don’t know how things may have ended. In my heart of hearts, I know they saved my life. And one day I know I`ll have to write at length about this experience, too!
Q) Do you believe “Foal and the Angels” appeals to all kinds of people, and did you write it with that in mind?
Absolutely! FOAL and the Angels is definitely not only for the spiritually-oriented, but also for the man in the street, for just everybody with an open heart. Besides, it`s such an easy and quick read that it can be enjoyed by the young and the old , the educated and the not-that-well educated, the spiritual and the not spiritual at all. That’s one more reason why I chose the story/fairytale format. FOAL and the Angels’ contents is spiritual indeed, but in a very common sense/everyday-life way. Apart from the bits of wisdom that are there for sure, FOAL`s reactions to that very wisdom can get kind of quite hilarious, too.
Q) What do you think makes a good book?

My goal with this blog is to offend everyone in the world at least once with my words… so no one has a reason to have a heightened sense of themselves. We are all ignorant, we are all found wanting, we are all bad people sometimes.
I rarely use foul or vulgar language without reason. That being said, don’t come here and tell me to change my words. Read something else or stop following me. I could care less, especially if your intent is to “mom” someone on THEIR BLOG! I won’t censor myself for any of you. Just don’t come back.
What dreams are relevant anymore? Your dreams? My own? What is rational and what is complete fantasy and who dictates which is which? I ponder these questions as I am sure many of you do. How can we not when we are fed such bullshit as children and only really start learning the realities as adults. I would even venture to say that half my college years I still feverishly believed that if I completed four years of college some magical door would open and a hand would guide me to my dream job. Wife, family, success, and happiness would then follow because that was the dream we were fed in the 90s and on into the 2000s. It is funny how reality strikes you as soon as the golden spoon falls from your lip and hits that pearly white floor with all of its contents.
It started with the idea that “YES, you can be anything you want to be in life even President of the United States!” That pep talk got me pumped and motivated till I realized that did not apply to me… I was adopted. As my hopes and dreams of world conquest went down the drain so too did my respect for Ms. Nancy (what political science book had she read?) and the vicious trap she had set for me. How dare she tell me a lie, wait for me to create a dream, and then provide me the very book that provided the answer that brought that dream crashing down! Little did I know that she was but the first of many to try and feed me bullshit by the spoon.
“Buy two and get one free!” Yes!!! But wait!!! You also have to buy a large drink, a large French fry, and dance in our commercial with the singing panda for free. WTF just happened?!? I really wouldn’t be surprised if this ever happened one day. I mean seriously, when did a “deal” become a hook to get your ass in a store? Everyone is a liar these days! And I still get upset if my hamburger doesn’t look like, taste like, and smell like I imagined when seeing your commercials. It is really upsetting when I spend the time to drive my small little Camry, with two car seats in the back, all the way to your side of town just for the super delicious burgers I have been waiting for all morning and part of the afternoon only to find out that the burger tastes like shit because Paul got in a fight with Cindy after finding out Cindy was sleeping with Paul’s brother. Great let’s just walk all over my dreams today people! With army boots!
We go to school for all those years, too many years of being in the same classroom with dumbasses. You know I honestly think my intelligence began to recede somewhere around grades 9 – 11. I seriously felt the dam backing up and knowledge spilling over the side because of all the useless chatter I had to hear each and every awful day. Memories… noooo! Scotch helps…
We go to school for all those years and for what? So we can find out that most of those dreams aren’t real. We find out that the police officer we wanted to be is probably a horrible idea, they only make 50K on average and get little compensation for a bullet in the ass. You realize that not everyone is equal, looks and even your name DO matter, and not everyone gets the same opportunities. You soon understand that sometimes your opinions aren’t wanted at all and that not everyone is of equal intelligence. Sometimes you find out that your dream job isn’t waiting and that things don’t go as planned. Just doing everything right doesn’t stop an external factor from causing you harm and that is a harsh reality of life. Some of us learn that the corporate world… it is just High School all over again. Instead of the football team, cheerleaders, nerds, in-crowd, teachers, and the Principle you have the basic equivalent just with different labels. We are all numbered sheep.
But it isn’t all bad and the people that break the mold are the ones that are happy. I am beginning to realize this, even as I put on my “work clothes” which are actually just like my everyday clothes, and make my lunch for the day. Sometimes we do what we “must” so that we can do what we like… what we love. I believe nothing is a waste of time as long as you are progressing or working towards a future goal. I had a feeling this was going to be a rather long post, I could really keep going forever on this topic but I won’t. I am going to cut it off shortly and finish by saying that I have come to realize that dreams aren’t all bullshit. But they must be realistic and that the realism behind them can be defined by you because it is your life. If you think something is a possibility and others think it is a complete waste of time you then have to draw your own lines of conclusion and conviction as to what you think is the right choice. There were many that thought this website was a waste of time when I started it in January… all the way till about May. Not many think it is a dream anymore.
Dreams of Fire and Death
This is a bit of ‘extra’ material to go along with the SEEDS trilogy. It’s a character-building exercise I did to get in the head of one of our characters, though I won’t say who – that might give away plot points from the books! It’s a very dark scene from the head of a man with a very dark history.
Last night’s demons were the flames again. They’ve found me often. The contour map they carved into my skin was enough to change the topography of my subconscious.
As always, I woke up panting, frantically patting my sheets and nightclothes, trying to smother the flames. What little boys don’t realize is that the nightmares don’t go away when you grow up. They get worse.
I splashed my face with water and went back to sleep. They don’t like water, demons.
This time the dreams were different. No flames, no gunshots, no knives. The demon that haunted me was a woman, blonde and fair skinned. She chased me through the same Sector streets I grew up defending – grew up loving. We played a deadly game where both were predator and each was prey.
I was unarmed, as I was in that final fight when she carved the symbol into my face, and I the heart from her chest. In this incarnation of our unending battle through my dreams, she chased me through an unending maze of shadows that have dogged me my whole life. Shadows, grey and dark as life itself, spoke to me, called at me, hounded me, and insulted me, though they never touched me. Even those scars, deep in the hidden recesses of my mind, know that my weaknesses are mental, not physical. They know how to reopen the wounds; how to cut deeper, always deeper than the last.
Abruptly, I found myself, not in a dismal, deadly maze, but on a cloud, the sun shining bright and the sky like lilacs in May. Then the blonde woman, whose beating heart I’d once held, stretched out her hand and said ‘I’m sorry.’ The clouds crumpled and I fell, tumbling through the fluted air, to my death.
Oh yes, my dreams know my weaknesses.
“It is as it is”
[Terry: This may be my first experience of ‘dystopic romantic” poetry.]
Look inside your memory…
None of this is real…
All you think you know…
See or touch and feel…
Everything’s a mirage…
To deflect what’s going on…
Life is one big film set…
You’re a lyric in its song…
All that is around you…
Is just one big illusion…
“They” rely on compliance…
And thrive on your confusion…
Step back; you can see it…
And try to break through…
Escape from all your chains…
You’ll witness life anew…
It’s not what you thought…
Or how you once believed…
All that has been taught…
Is how “They” have deceived…
We work for the rich men…
Who laugh at the poor…
If you think there is equality…
You need to reveal more…
And understand what’s going on…
Outside your buried head…
Because people are so wicked…
And won’t care when you’re dead…
Start to ask some questions…
Don’t stop; just keep on probing…
Once you’ve got your foot in….
The door of truth keeps opening…
Allowing you to dig a little deeper…
Scratch the surface of your life…
It’s a place filled with misery…
Tears and death and strife…
A place where all innocence…
Is cruelly ripped away…
A place where no one notices…
The beauty of a dawning day…
A place where liberty in death…
Is the only one true freedom…
One thing we can all agree…
This is no Garden of Eden…
It’s time to stop the dreaming…
See things for what they are…
They call this “Hell on Earth”…
That’s more truth than lie by far…

Dreams are only dreams if you don’t believe them.

You need to get hungry if you really want to eat. Get hungry.
Several studies have repeatedly proven that multitasking is impossible.
Your brain can only truly focus on one thing at a time. And so it’s monumentally important that you direct all of your energy and concentration on the task at hand.
When you’re doing your work, be in the moment fully, and soon, it’ll no longer feel like work.
To do great work, you need great focus.
You need to muster all the energy in your brain and laser beam it all towards that one, single task.
Ignore all the noise and the distractions around you and really start to dig in.
Embody it. Own it. Want it.
And soon, you’ll find that your work will become enjoyable. It’ll become fun.
You’ll feel powerful. Like you’re in control.
No longer at affect, but imposing you’re ways.
You’ll become commander in chief.
And your work will become whatever you want it to.
Everything will be going as you wish, and it will all feel effortless.
And after a few days, when you’re taking a little break from creating your masterpiece, you’ll suddenly realize that after years of slaving over your work, staying in the moment has made the work become a slave, to you.
Your work and your life will start obeying their master’s every command.
You can have it all, right now.
It just takes a sickening, locked in focus.
Go get it.

I craved the lies he told
The devil and his words
He sang with truth
His clever disguise
A fan of every line
Disciple of his flattery
My pulse raced
With every pause
My heart quickened
With every verse
But they were figments
Of my imagination
Fueled by desperate need
A hopeful want
That I will never find
But within pages

“I had hoped to be disliked by most, not by way of rebellion, but by way of excellence, disdain for the habitual, and the common man’s inability to grasp this. The act of being scorned? I saw it as a victory, my irreverent boast against this world which could never fully quench me.” ― Coco J. Ginger

“You never let a woman know she has you, it drives them wild. It’s beautiful.”
“But what if you really like her, and being with her makes you happy?”
“That is the happy. When you win, you are happy.”
“That sounds like a lose.“
“No, you don’t understand, you win the girl.”
“Do you get the girl?”
“Not exactly, but she’s there if you want her. You win the power. You own her brain, and get to live in her heart.”
“But where does she live? Who’s heart does she live in? I don’t get it. What happens to the girl, where does she go? Who gets the girl?“
“She’s just there. I can take her or not, it doesn’t even matter, she is mine in theory.”
“So you don’t have her, but she’s yours?“
“But what happens if the girl decides to leave? Does she beat you? Does she win this prize you can’t explain?
And if she takes your prize, what makes you happy?”
“She makes me happy. That’s why I have to win her. I need her.”
“I can’t. It doesn’t work that way. It’s not that simple.”
“Maybe she needs you too.”
“She doesn’t. She is too good for me. The only way I can win her is if I kill her.”
“Fine. Then kill her.“
“I already did.

“But you won, right?”
“And you’re happy ?“
“Yes, I think….except I feel a little empty.“
“What do you mean?”
“It seems my planning was not well plotted—my heart seems to be missing.”
“Yes, she has stolen my heart.“
“I’m not sure, I’ve not played this role. My body isn’t functioning correctly, and she’s running circles inside my brain. I feel sick to my stomach.“

An Honest Attempt at Interesting Literature.
You came up in my thoughts again today. It’s been months since we’ve spoken and even longer since our last soiree. You who tortured my dreams after months of existential vomit on that lakeside where we smoked joints and laughed at nothing. You who uncovered my inner malcontent only to watch as I stumbled through my weak-willed inability to leave. You were my muse, and still are for a reason I would purge from my heart if I could only pinpoint the proper area code. I still have that letter I was going to send you, to your house in that quiet college city turned industrial wasteland with one proper coffee shop and terrible barbers. I still remember your street name, and not because it reads the same as that indie band I told you about and you never listened to.
Your flaws are still beautiful in my memory. It would be a waste to message you, to interrupt your happiness if only to indulge hopes that have grown but not matured. You are the breeze in my window, cooling me off as I float through these anxieties into an existential bliss only to wake up trembling from your persistence. You spread the stain of cigarettes across my apartment, so well swept and clean only a week ago. I want to learn another language to see if the romance remains unchanged but struggle to see how it could. Sometimes, when I sit smoking into a fan that blows those gentle puffs out the window only to have them thrown back in my face diluted, I wonder whether you would admire my brooding or write it off as a clichéd and immature simulacrum of sadness. I wouldn’t change either way, but it would be nice to know.

leisurely birds, thick trunked
and peeling trees, the buzzing
of those electrical poles, lines
that slice through beauty to
provide sustenance for these
How can you so calmly
emit those intoxicating melodies
while monstrous industry
threatens your very being?
How can you so wordlessly
inebriate my restless heart;
grow poetry on your veins;
treat clouds like old friends on a
visit for a cup of tea and a shot
of soju, drink their elixir, and
continue singing for
the rest of the night?
How tired you must be,
all these years carrying
men on those loft shoulders,
absorbing that radiant orange
glow for hours,
only to be force-fed electric imitations
when you used to rest.

deciduous teeth need no

The highway to publication overflows with cars: luxury behemoths; sensible hybrids; nondescript, windowless vans with strange dents that protrude from the inside. Each bears the logo of the mechanic who brought it to life. You’ve built a car, too, with good mileage and a cherry spoiler. [Author’s note: The cars are a metaphor for your books.]
But when you get your baby on the highway, you can’t ignore that a metallic paint job and tilt steering is all that differentiates your vehicle from every other car in its class, no matter what shiny-metal totem adorns its hood. How does your creation stand out? You don’t need a better insignia. You don’t even need the car metaphor. You need to remake yourself. You must become the deer sprinting headlong across the road. When your book crumples someone’s hood and cracks their windshield, rest assured you’ve got their attention. And that’s pretty much the Tab-A and Slot-B of branding.
