Klees Butterfly

A Slow Travel Blog

by David Herbert Lawrence

Butterfly, the wind blows sea-ward,
strong beyond the garden-wall!
Butterfly, why do you settle on my
shoe, and sip the dirt on my shoe,
Lifting your veined wings, lifting them?
big white butterfly!Paul Klee, Without Title, about 1892. Water-color and pencil.

Already it is October, and the wind
blows strong to the sea
from the hills where snow must have
fallen, the wind is polished with
Here in the garden, with red
geraniums, it is warm, it is warm
but the wind blows strong to sea-ward,
white butterfly, content on my shoe!

Will you go, will you go from my warm
Will you climb on your big soft wings,
as up an invisible rainbow, an arch
till the wind slides you sheer from the
and in a strange level fluttering you go
out to sea-ward, white speck!

The Artists’ Colony (Künstlerkolonie) Mathildenhöhe is considered the most beautiful Art Nouveau/Jugendstil complex in Germany.  It provided impulses toward reform in the areas of architecture, landscape art, interior design, and arts and crafts.

darmstadt 231This gentleman is Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen (1868-1937). Without the educated and art-appreciative Grand Duke, Mathildenhöhe would not have existed in its current form. Ernst Ludwig had close connections to England, and so he had contact with the arts and crafts movement there, which opposed architectural historicism and low-quality goods. From this evolved a return to the qualities of craftsmanship.
In 1898, Ernst Ludwig called seven artists (among them Peter Behrens, Joseph Maria Olbrich and Albin Müller) to Darmstadt. Those artists created the so-called Artists’ Colony between 1899 and 1914.

For a moment there I thought I was going to be able to enjoy the silence, then the Mexican church that rents out rooms in the hotel every Sunday got REALLY LOUD again. As an anthropology minor I totally appreciate and find interesting how they worship, blowing horns to the angels and all, but as a peon stuck in a walk in closet of an office I can barely hear customers on the phone even with the door closed.

Ethiopian coffee is delicious. And strong, maybe that’s what I like about it. As I sip the medium McDonalds coffee David brought me I long for what I had last night (in it’s cute little pot and small cups). We had gone to a small Ethiopian restaurant and ordered a platter of various vegetarian side dishes along with a mixture of meats (beef, lamb and chicken) which were sautéed with peppers and onions. At first I was in a bad mood. I didn’t want Ethiopian for dinner, I have to be in the mood for certain cuisines, but it was a nice experience and I felt healthy leaving.

I really appreciate all the comments on my blog posts lately. It makes me feel like a real person in this community. Thanks guys!

I did get into my lab class, so next semester, which is going to be my last (God willing) is going to be intense. Work is super busy today. I’m starting to lose it a little bit. All my thoughts are getting fragmented more and more as I get orders pouring in.

I had a flare of jealousy over some chick on facebook today, and I swear bipolar jealousy is ten times worse than the normal kind! Managing my emotions has been a lot easier with adjusted medication but I still need to use mindfulness. Besides, I’m 26, grow up loser, everything’s fine.

Un Apologetic

I’m unapologetic for the things I was born with

ok maybe that’s a little exaggerated
I might be considered a pothead but I’m well educated
those euphoric buds really have me infatuated
got tired of people trying to school me, so I graduated

I SAW YOU YESTERDAY | Catching up with keith garrett poetry

It’s been so long since last i saw your face, listened as you spoke to me,

I remember all the things you taught me, Watched shows with you back then.

Rides in your car to the beach and many other special places,

Life with you was always great, at the same time never so perfect.

Each day i saw you as you would say a short goodbye,

My day as a child was spent doing childish things.

At the end of the passing day i would await your return,

Sit down and rest with a beer and a show just before dinner.

You taught me right, reminded me when i did wrong,

A friend when i wanted, a father when most needed.

It’s been so long, much to long since last we played,

I saw you yesterday, when the sun went down you were gone.

[Terry:  I used to have a friend–a very serious accounting-type person at work–who would take three weeks off each fall and live at the local Renaissance Festival as a Gypsy.  I can also remember a story from Los Angeles in 1973 where they wandered around the First Ren Fest. Girls love to dress up in costume for the Renaissance Festival.  Here is a selection of ladies or wenches in Renaissance period clothing, belly dance costumes, slave girl dress, fantasy outfits, Brazilian Samba costumes, German Octoberfest wear and barbarian armor.  All were shot on October 6, 2012, opening day in Plantersville, Texas.  The weather was ideal and by the end of the day the light was soft aided by cloud cover.  Note that in these 15 images everyone was either performing in public or had been asked if it was OK before I shot.  You might also want to look at the Chainmail images from that same day.

“Fids! Fids! Oh, Fids! I gloat! Hear me gloat!”
They spun wildly on their heels, jodeling after the accepted manner of a “gloat,” which is not unremotely allied to the primitive man’s song of triumph, …

Ti-ra-la-la-i-tu! I gloat! Hear me!” Beetle spun behind him with outstretched arms.

The Mist is thick but Your light is strong, so we keep on keeping on

Just the Two of Us

September 2, 2013

Just the two of us running
this game together – shaming
the world into accepting
our pain, whether or not they
are even inclined to play.
Just the two of us fighting
each other while making the
world think they had something to
do with the fact that you
appear so used up.
Like an abused pup your eyes
so shamelessly grasping for
love, knowing that I could
never indulge in such
activities. You put on
a good show, the happy
loving version that people
see, but I’m no actor so
I just lie underneath,
pulling your strings, ready and
willing to add to your
– subliminally justified
if not morally recognized,
to fight back against the fears
that I see in your eyes.

Time you shameless abuse,
but I feel my clock is ticking
and I’m not sure what I could
be thinking by letting you
play games as I am
suffering under the pain
of your indecision – a
life unused for what it was
born and I abhor the
unicorn notion of scorn
– unreal idealistic
judgment forlorn to be born
without moral justification.
I’m worn out
– gone with the doubt,
so I’m balling my fingers
to increase my clout as I
lower my voice and give you
the choice to run.

Do you really believe that
a fall is just a fall when
you were standing as close to
the edge as you could
possibly get? – and I’m left
to wonder if I shouldn’t
have caught you now that I’m in
the dirt and soaking wet with
the mess of your life combined
with the mess of mine as we’re
destined to replay this
mistake time after time, you
and me for the rest of our
days trying to escape this
crazy labyrinth of
considerations and
consequences, knowing we’re
dragging ourselves deeper and
deeper and tiring out,
growing weaker and weaker,
and by the week you become
less and less of a seeker,
and I have less and less
justification for
playing the preacher when I
can’t even get my act
together, let alone pretend
to be your teacher. But what
I can give you is more of
the same, emotional
instability to keep
you deranged, uh I mean
entertained, full of life
so far as you follow my
lead, yes I put on a good
show so come back for round
two and we’ll give it
another go, and I’ll give
you more abuse – I’ll make you
again the fool because that’s
just what I do, and that’s
just what you love
– some call me
as cruel but I am
your ego and
your heart
I do rule.

I can still smell the day|Catching up with Poesy plus Polemics

I can still smell the day
my soft leather bookbag
fresh oiled with linseed
looked after no less than
my trusty old baseball mitt
pulpy brown paper
for covering textbooks
the redolent shavings
from sharpened new pencils
ammonia laced water
cleaned fountain pen nibs
virgin black and white marble
clad ruled composition books
cracked freshly open
clean crisp and awaiting
new knowledge and penmanship
heady with hopes and
excitement imagining
teacher and classmates
who’d make for enjoyable
days amid chalk-dusted
blackboards and inkwells
although it’s all well more
than sixty years gone
I can still smell the day

What Do You Look for in a Humorous Villain? |Catching up with Legends of Windemere

Legends of Windemere

Now, we’ve seen villains with a sense of humor in comics (Joker), cartoons (Hades), and comedies (Dark Helmet).  You can obviously have a villain with a sense of humor that is goofy, sarcastic, or twisted.  They can still be effective too depending on the genre.  Not all comedic villains are bumbling idiots that would fail even if the heroes hadn’t gotten involved.  I always got that sense that He-Man didn’t really have to work hard to thwart Skeletor at times.  Don’t even get me started on Cobra Commander in the cartoon.

Effectiveness is a major challenge if you’re writing a villain that is funny.  Looking that three examples, you can see what some of the choices are:

  1. Dark Helmet–  From Spaceballs, Dark Helmet is powerful, but he’s rather accident prone and a goof.  You lose a lot of effectiveness with him because funny stuff happens to him without his intent.  This works in a comedy, but outside of a comedy, it makes for a weak main villain.  A secondary villain could get away with it, but the main villain does need have some semblance of control.
  2. Hades–  Cunning and in control of the situation, this type of villain is like an evil Grouch Marx.  Many times this is the egotistical planner that is manipulating everyone around him or her.  The humor comes from his wit and sarcasm, which is difficult to write.  Not everyone has this ability, so you really need to get feedback on this kind of villain or watch sarcastic comments.  This type of humor can improve the character’s effectiveness because it is a sign of intelligence.
  3. Joker– While Joker can be a catch-all at times, he is a twisted humor character.  Victims with his smile, crazy traps, wild laugh, and murderous plots that you laugh at for some bizarre reason.  It’s a delicate balance between crazy and effective here.  Go too far and you have a raving psychotic that is merely disturbing.  Don’t go far enough and you have a mildly humorous villain that seems to be phoning it in.

Personally, I like humorous villains that are effective.  The goofy villain is great in comedies, but only comedies for me.  A series story should have a seriously dangerous villain, but you can give them a sense of humor.  Most people have that in some form and villains are people too.  Unless they’re robots, aliens, animals, ghosts, zombies, possessed farm equipment, haunted house, lawyers, shparkly vampires, politicians, or a bio-engineered disease.

Cloud Nine?

Marshmallow blanket rendered
Tenacity about my feet
As what dreams surrendered
Before we gray daylight meet
Let me wake from this dream
And stare you down for truth
You are not as you seem
Gin and tonic’s icy couth
That which did attract
Will wax and wane
I can’t add then subtract
My feelings to sustain
The green of the trees
Nature’s bounty, summer’s day
Fades into a fawny breeze
Still, I’ll kick the blanket away

Flak Jacket

Dear Readers,

I have reached the darkest of my days. I lack hope that light will reach me again. I will no longer fake my way through It.  I am sorry, but my sorrow runs deep.  I don’t know why it is always me feeling this way.  I abhor this life of constant heartache, filled with too many tears.

This was written for the one who blacked out the hope. Turn the other cheek, and I do, even in despair…

Flak Jacket

If you’re ever overcome
By the rustling of the leaves
Listen with your heart
As history tells of ancient beliefs
The souls of the dead
Remained with essential gear
So when I pass away
I’ll stay very near
You’ll always have me
No matter when
If the trees are barren
They’ll be green soon again
Never feel alone
Forgotten or sad
I’ll live forever
In the love that we had

Certain Dogs Do Need Sun Protection – Catching up with Sunny Sleevez

Does Your Pooch Make The List? |

Sunny Sleevez.

Cooling Off

Cooling Off

We love our pets; we buy special foods, lots of healthy treats and of course shower them with fun toys. I take my pups everywhere I go and though I am always prepared for anything it’s easy to forget that one of my dogs is actually prone to sunburn. I’ve had to incorporate an organization system to make sure each of my dogs have what they need while we are out hitting the trails! I’ve come up with two bags that I keep next to the door, one for Mikey and one for Foxy. Mikey has his sunscreen, bottled water and certain soft treats and Foxy has her kong ball, bottled water and of course some great raw hides! This system has helped me out more then I can tell you!
I never knew that Mikey was prone to sunburn until last year; once I found out I got prepared quick! I can see how people may not actually know if their breed is prone to sunburn or not because I was once there. The best way to know is to take your dog out, bring something for shade of course but evaluate them upon returning to see if they do in fact have effects of sun overexposure. If they do there are great doggie sunscreens out there and you can even use human sunscreen as long as you rub it in and keep them from licking it off. Below I’m going to list some dog breeds that may be prone to sun burn. This should help owners be more prepared when taking their beloved pets out for a day of play!
• Boxers
Chinese Crested
American Staffordshire Terriers
• Dalmatians
• Greyhounds
• White German Sheppards
Though my dog is not actually on this list he still get’s sun burns if he is out too long. It’s a good idea to just check your pup out after a romp around the lake or a small trail run. Check their belly as well, this area is especially prone to sunburn because the sun reflects off the ground and hits the underbelly of your pet. If you find they do have a sunburn placing a cold compress over the area should help relieve any pain. If it’s raised or blistering taking your pet to the vet would be a good idea. Our pets depend on us completely so keeping them safe from sun burn is just another way we show how much we care about them!

Do you have a dog that is not on the breed list that has experienced sun burns?

We would love to hear your personal stories! Tell us about it!

The Pea Green Sea: Robert J. Watson Returns! | Novel Ideas

Robert J. Watson has one of those distinctive stories. The kind of story that leads one to wonder “how come this guy hasn’t written a biography already?”

The truth is, we are writing a biography of sorts. This kind of interview series can be pieced together to create the history of an artist.

So, let’s continue on this journey.

The history of Robert J. Watson.

Q) Let me start by asking you, Robert, what does it take to be a merchant sailor?

A) I have said for many, many years, sailors are born into it. You will never just be one; and I think you need a sense of adventure, a longing to see the world, and a love of the sea you could never get ashore. You definitely need a sense of humour.

Q) What’s so important about a sense of humour?

A) Nick, you live in a tight community, and every day is different. The work is hard and sailors have a habit of playing practical jokes on each other. There is a saying: “You should not have signed on if you cannot take a joke.”

Q) So, joking aside, you are in the middle of the ocean. How does that feel?

A) It is the most wonderful feeling in the world. You can be a thousand miles from land, maybe even in a storm, but each day you smile because it is you and the sea. I also think you have to be a little scared. The sea demands fear. It is a respectful kind of scared though. The sea demands respect, or it’s likely to bite you in the arse.

Terry Irving’s Resume Reel.

Watch the first piece at least. It’s Ten Things You Should Never Do on Television News.

Welcome to a new friend: allmostrelevant

still can’t decide if I misspelled that

THIS: This is my “About” page because I suppose I should have one. This whole thing is really just something to get my mind off of getting my mind off things. However for now what you see is just a view into what I think about during a typical day. I’m not really ‘working’ on this, it’s just whatever happens, however lately I’ve been leaning towards concision. However unpoetic ‘mind dumping’ is, I find it rather accurate, but if it weren’t for dropping mental loads, I’ve found the phrase ‘bite size is the right size’ rather enjoyable.

CONTENT: The easiest way to see the variety of the content on here is to go to the CONTENT page. Everything is organized there, as opposed to the home page which is just chronoillogical. And if you want to search for “caterpillar” or “what am I doing,” then you can use the search bar at the bottom to search for random things and see what comes up.

SHARE: Please feel free to post, re-post, talkabout, ‘like,’ or share anything you find enjoyable. From what I hear, the side effects of doing so are relatively painless, but it just lets me know what you enjoy, and what I should do more of.

If you want to use anything anywhere, just make sure people know where you got it from (hint: here. Everything is original). But please do share stuff at the places you go with the people that are there, or rattle off a quote to your friends at a cocktail party, I don’t know. Start a conversation or two.

…Not sure if that was all “About,”

PS: REQUESTS: I’ll do my best to take some requests. How this would work is either in the form of one word or phrase, and I’ll do something with it (eg: war fair). How this wouldn’t work is if you say, “Write a story about a lonely pencil sharpener who finds everyone’s gone mechanical. DO IT NOW!” However funny the prompt is, you have also told me what to write. If you have a premise, I would strongly encourage you to write it yourself, but if you say,  ”mechanical pencil sharpener,” and are curious to see what I’ll do with that grouping of words, then by all means leave that as a request!

Let’s say 3 words max, although I love two and one word titles the best. For some categories I use zero word titles. Anyways; you can comment anywhere on the site and I’ll make it happen.

PPSS: There is a twitter now @allmostrelevant I put even shorter things there. Sometimes funny. Most of the times stupid.

PPPSSS: I’m now on facebook! I don’t really know what to do with it, but I was hoping that would be a place for more open discussion, a place where I can post other pictures, doodles, and additional stuff, and a place where we can all ask questions, try to think of answers, and just some good old fashioned run-on sentences like this. I realize more people have facebook than WordPress (I know… I know), so that might make it easier to share something that made you laugh or smile so then your friends can laugh and smile too.

Articles, speeches, essays, reviews, opinion, poetry, screenplays, comedy sketches, company slogans/names, ANYTHING… except I won’t write your college admission essay or do your homework for you (that’s not cool, kids).

My goal is to make writing a full time job where I can make enough money to eat food and turn a light on, and the best way to make money is by getting paid, thus this is only for serious inquiries only. So please, if you are an individual or business in need of a writer, fill out the little form below, I will get back to you, and we can discuss details.

However in the mean time, feel free to browse the rest of the web sight. Thanks for reading.

International Bellhop -- Chandlery Store

Welcome To the Chandlery

Nearly 800 Years Ago: Candle-makers and their shops were some of the first municipal-based businesses — meaning, that they were supported by the state (A loosely connected feudal system that was governed by lords and land-owners. As naval conquest and exploration via ships became the world’s fascination, people started to travel the world on ever-growing ships that became the formidable beasts of the seas. Within the bellies of these sea-beasts, were small shops — usually near the entry to the storage decks — that took on the name of “Chandleries.”

As marine travel progressed, and the world saw architectural masterpieces such as The Titanic, The Mauritania, and The Queen Mary, these shops became full decks and were the basis of the first shopping malls and business centers. Many hotels and businesses still offer the same type of stores that replenish your stock of goods and toiletries while traveling, and still honor the tradition by naming them The Chandlery.
In-Fact, Vanguard Group — a financial institution with a campus in Scottsdale, Arizona — have a Chandlery that offers their employees basic necessities such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, snacks, gifts, and even gift basket packages that you can send to co-workers or clients, right in the lobby.

The Lavender Fields of Provence | Pressed Words (Catching up with old friends)

The Lavender Fields of Provence

Visiting the lavender fields of Provence, France, has been a prominent lust on my travel bucket list for some time now. To catch the lavender, you have to time your trip just right – if you’re too soon you miss the bloom, and if you’re too late, they may have already harvested the beautiful flowers to dry. Luckily, not only did we catch the lavender, but we were also treated to speckles of red all along the landscape, as the poppies were still mildly in bloom as well. But before any of that, we had a slight road-trip ahead of us, up into the French AlpsIMG_0165^ ^ I spy with my little eye. . . . IMG_0184^ ^ We followed a driving route mapped in the Michelin Green Guide to the French Alps. In the book, the tour is called the Valensole Plateau. We wound into the mountains, and after more than an hour of navigating twisting roads and rocky slopes, we were treated to some stunning views.IMG_0199^ ^ This was our first glimpse of the lavendar fields, far, far off in the distance.IMG_0236^ ^ In the middle of the green mountains, we spotted a true-blue oasis. The driving route took us in a curve around the entire lake, and we vowed to come back for a swim later if we had time.IMG_0214IMG_0225IMG_0221

[Terry: I’m sorry. I mean, I’ve been to Provence and even to a factory where they pressed lavender and stuff and smelled the fields and all but MY NOSE WOULD HAVE EXPLODED HALFWAY THROUGH YOUR FRAGRANT (and possibly flagrant) ROMP!

When my daughter forces me into a Sephora, I’ve got two sniffs before everything above my eyes goes numb.]

Canada Day + Summer = A Great Day

Posted on July 1, 2013 by Christy Birmingham

Hello my Poetic Peeps!

It is Canada Day here and we are celebrating our country full of its beautiful trees, flowers, and genuine souls! To my Canadian followers, I wish you a glorious holiday. To my friends who live elsewhere, I do hope your day is full of smiles and contentment. That is what I wish for us all.

Don’t we all crave that breath, the long exhale, the sigh that is full of contentment?

Today on this holiday, I unveil the first of my quote cards that my friend Cat Forsley made for me. She is a beautiful singer and artist, so please visit her site if you have not already. She made the card, part of a collection just for me. I am spoiled!

Have a wonderful summer day, all of you! ~christyb

Painted Cat

Painted Cat

For this Caturday post I started with a single image of a cat with what looks like a pattern of a cat on it’s back! Could I really find 9 more just like it?!? Well it seems it was something that people are calling “Cat Painting” and if that sounds weird it is because it IS weird. I have no idea if they are real or not, but some of them look rather amazing indeed…
