Wedding fever- 300 word story

First of all i want to thank zaphnathpaaneah05.wordpress.com for giving me an opportunity to wrap my words around this picture prompt. So the picture prompt below was provided for anyone to weave a 300 word story from, and here goes mine…

Image

Yesterday was my bachelor party, I had all my friends there; Kelvin, Jake, Jeffrey, Chuks, Henry and the pessimist sadistic George. The party was lively and bustling, my guys had come with their many fling girlfriends, dancing, rocking and real lap-dancing.

George, just as always, kept asking how prepared I was for the marriage, citing instances of men who had fled on their wedding day or called their supposed wives on phone on the eve of the bachelor party, cancelling the wedding because they had cold feet and felt rather unsure about the marriage decision. This really got to me, I have always been fearful about the decision I have taken to marry  Kate, she’s a good woman, but whether or not that was enough is what keeps me scared.

So today is the wedding day, Kelvin, as my best man made sure I was well dressed up and ready for the event. Just as I was about to step into the car, I felt a stomach upset rising, must have been out of nervousness. I rushed to the convenience, followed by Kelvin and the other men. After that, I wasn’t still relaxed so I narrated my situation to the guys and Kelvin suggested they lay hands on me so that we can pray and hand over everything to God. By then, we were about 2hours behind schedule; people were already calling to know where I was.

“I’ve been so worried darling” that was Kate, immediately we arrived at the church, looking weak and with a face that showed she had cried. I hugged her warmly.

“We were scared something had gone wrong, so the bridesmaids surrounded me and we held hands in prayers”. “I love you baby” I said to her as I kissed her forehead, feeling sure.

Do you think you can weave a 300 word story off this picture prompt? if yes, please do, and please post a link of your story here, so that i can read what you made of the picture prompt.

The Nigerian case

Waking up this morning, burdened by thoughts of Nigeria, that place we call home, made an abattoir of hopes and structural humanity. That place we call home, the greedy man’s haven, the wicked man’s meat. I tried to look into Nigeria’s future as I looked through my window, far into oblivion. I realized that the place we call home has turned to the valley in which our dreams perish in the pool of corruption, unemployment, abject poverty, and incessant University strike actions, turning Universities into a factory that produces sub-standard graduates. In one of the universities, it was reported that a graduate once came to collect her certificate, she was required to write “Original copy collected by me” to confirm that she was really the recipient of the certificate, but to the utter amazement of everybody present, she didn’t know how to write “original copy collected by me”-a University graduate.

Nigeria is a country in the West of the African continent, with a population of about 174million which places it at the 7th position in the most populous countries of the world. Having 36 states, and over 500 ethnic groups which include; nupe, igbo, hausa, igala, ijaw, oron, itsekiri, youruba etc. Nigeria is one of the most multi-cultured countries in the world. Religion in Nigeria is divided among the Christians mostly in the south and the Muslims mostly in the north, and a few traditional worshipers.

My position in this article is that of a Nigerian igbo youth, with enough knowledge about Nigeria to inform my decisions when issues of Nigeria arise.

Nigeria, a former colony of the Great Britain, gained independence in 1960. It was christened Nigeria by Flora Shaw who was the fiancé of the then British colonial administrator-Sir Baron Lugard. The Nigerian independence was a fruit of the struggles of some intellectuals in the then colony which included; Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe, Herbert Macaulay, Anthony Enahoro, Joseph Tarka, Murtala Mohammed, Alvan Ikoku, and Aminu Kano. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was the first president of Nigeria.

i beheld your fragile figure,

in your fine suiting cot,

kicking and boxing gestures

you made. lending friendship

to a world unbeknownst.

your eyes full of inquisition,

and yet admiration,

at huge wobbling figures.

this tickles your fancy(i think),

lovely tiny smile,

very endearing. more beautiful

than fresh roses.

i held you in my arms,

feeling both luck and pride,

as you gazed still into my face,

deciphering my nature(i think),

new child of an old world,

rekindling joy,

and wiping tears,

bringing momentary peace,

                                 to a world in chaos.

my prayers go with you young soul,

in the voice of my soul,

and the yearn of my ink,

the world is yours,

to live and make right,

for soon, i shall look upon you,

and thank the celestial beings

that i witnessed your coming.

Dan Newman | The Clearing: Ontario Launch!

Dan Newman

Calling Exhibit A Ontario Fans!

Dan Newman is launching The Clearing on Saturday, 2 November and we are inviting you, one and all, to join him for a wonderful evening!

Starting at 7pm, in A Different Drummer Books, Dan will be reading from The Clearing, as well as busily signing copies and no doubt, reading from this fantastic debut.

Invite_Final_Sept_17_2013

Who: Dan Newman Launching The Clearing
Where: A Different Drummer Books, 513 Locust St, Burlington, OH
When: 2 November, 7pm

In 1976, four boys walked into a jungle. Only three came back alive.

The Clearing by Dan NewmanHaunted by terrifying childhood memories he doesn’t fully understand, journalist Nate Mason returns to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia where he grew up.

Back then, as the son of a diplomat, he was part of an elite social circle. But during a weekend of whispered secrets and dares in a decaying jungle mansion staffed by the descendants of slaves, Nate’s innocence was torn apart.

The survivors of that gathering blamed what happened on a myth, an unseen terror from the bush. No one believed them. But now. almost forty years later, is the truth finally about to come out?

Within hours of arriving back on the island, Nate becomes convinced he’s being followed. He soon discovers that his search for answers could cost him his sanity as well as his life, as he realises that some childhood nightmares never go away.

Can childhood nightmares haunt you for the rest of your life? How much do you need to believe in a monster for it to become real? The Clearing is a dark and atmospheric psychological thriller, full of intrigue, terror and superstition, which examines our deepest fears of the unknown. A potent mix of the friendship and bravery ofStand By Me and the betrayals and fear of Angel Heart.

The son of a globetrotting international aid worker, Newman, who was https://i2.wp.com/exhibitabooks.com/wp-content/uploads/Dan-Newman-250x300.jpgborn in England, grew up on St. Lucia in the Caribbean – where The Clearing is set – then in the Kingdoms of Lesotho and Swaziland in Southern Africa, then Canada, then England again, then Australia, and then…

Well, you get the picture. His education was similarly global; primary school beneath swaying palms in the Caribbean, secondary school in Africa at an international boarding school (witnessing apartheid throttle a nation across the border in South Africa), and then undergrad and grad school in Canada and Australia respectively.

There were starts and stops on the career track, too. He played semi professional football in Africa, and had trials at a number of clubs in London – all of whom chose to callously snuff out his boyhood dreams. (It turns out the ability to actually control a football is quite important to those who manage these teams.)

To put himself through school, Newman spent time as a sweaty mover (be nice to those guys), a plant pot cleaner (less so to them), and a beer brewer. Eventually, after taking a keen interest in journalism and heading to Australia to complete his graduate degree, Newman found a way to avoid doing any actual real work by writing copy for corporations. Later still, that became a career in corporate communications.

And that’s where he finds himself today: in Toronto, Canada, plying his trade for a Fortune 500 company.

Missionaries 🙂

MISSIONARIES

I’m 16 and this wholes year I’ve had a burden for missionaries. At first I never really thought about actually being a Missionary. But I went to a youth conference with my youth group, and that week they were talking about a Missionaries. There was a Missionary there named, Bobby Bonner. And he used to be a national Baseball player. He is in Baseball history for the most innings in a game. It was a record! At his time, he was the most known baseball player. His wife was close to God, and then God just got a hold of Bobby Bonner’s life. And he gave up everything he had with baseball, and gave everything he had to God. He became a missionary to Africa. And his stories are AMAZING! He told this one story at the youth conference about when he was in Africa. He said that he went to this village and gave the Gospel out, beginning with “In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth.” Because that village didn’t even know the name of Jesus, they’ve never heard of Jesus before. So Bro.Bonner explained to them about God and how God created all the earth and the things in the earth and he talked about Jesus and how He died on the cross to save them. And that whole village got saved. Then as they began to sing and dance and sing some more. Another village came over wanting to know why they were singing and dancing. And they were singing and dancing cause they now knew Jesus they knew who he was and that they got saved! Then that group of people from that other village wanted to know who Jesus was. And then that whole village got saved! Then another village came and then another!! It was so amazing, to see God’s blessing s upon Bro. Bonner. He got to lead at least 4-5 villages to the LORD! :) How great is that!!!

(BIG SNIP–CLICK HERE for All of the Story)

But anyways, as I was telling my mom about it all, she told me this, “Thats funny you say that, cause since you were about 13 I have felt God telling me that He wants you to be a missionary.” Aint that amazing! How God was telling me about missions and He was telling my mom about it too. She said that it’s gonna be hard cause she doesn’t want me to go. Cause im her daughter. She doesn’t want me to leave. But then again, she knows it’s God’s calling for me. I told her that she doesn’t have to worry, I’ll be safe. And I wont be leaving anytime soon. :) I’m so happy.
Thank you, dear LORD. You’ve showed me something so amazing. I love you, LORD! :)

Handing down your legacy….

~What will your legacy be?

That is something I’ve been thinking about for some time. Ever since my father died in 2008 I’ve been pondering the meaning of what it is to leave a legacy.

How do you want people to remember you?

One Love: The Very Best of Bob Marley & The Wa...

One Love: The Very Best of Bob Marley & The Wailers (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I’ve recently watched quite a few documentaries on Bob Marley and a picture has been forming in my mind about the man; he wanted to be remembered by,

–> the love he had for his family and friends

–> the passion he had for music

–> his commitment toward the freedom and equality of all people

–> and his  love for Africa

I’ve talked quite a bit about the fast paced nature of life here in Western Culture because I believe it is this fast food frenzy paced way of life that leaves many of us feeling a tad bit overwhelmed.

Perhaps you are thinking; “Kenneth, you want me to think about life legacy today? I barely have enough time each day to brush my teeth and put on clean clothes!”

Unfortunately, many people are in that same boat; they are so busy, so conflicted with day-to-day responsibilities, and so overwhelmed with merely keeping their head above water that they are thankful to put their head on a pillow at the end of the day and breathe a sigh of relief that they made it through the day alive.

I don’t have any simple solutions…..

I realize life is fast paced……but is that really what we want to leave as our legacy, is that how we want our children to remember us; “my mother was  overwhelmed”

In my days as a college student studying counseling I was taught to help people learn that they can be happier if they slow down their life…..

You can’t control traffic….but you can change how you react to it

The Clearing November 2013

All three of the boys knew Richard was dead.

His limp form lay at their feet in silence, his eyes wide and unblinking, and his left hand waving an eerie goodbye as the river tugged at his arm in a regular, unsettling rhythm.  They stood in a loose semicircle, their wet clothes dripping and making small spattering sounds on the bank, watching for something to happen but knowing nothing would. That image would burn indelibly into each of their memories, even haunt them from time to time.  And one day it would reclaim them entirely.Decades later, Nate’s life is being viciously stripped bare.  Everything he has worked for is falling unstoppably apart: the last handhold he can reach for, his last chance at redemption lies -– just as it always has -– in a dark clearing in the heart of the island’s rainforest.  Nate must travel back to the clearing, back to the world as it was when he was twelve and to the moment when his childhood was cut suddenly and brutally short.  To survive the collapse of his personal and professional worlds means tearing open another, and threatening to expose wicked secrets long held by the island’s powerful elite.   In a land steeped in occult and Obeah lore from deep in the St. Lucian rainforest, Nate’s only chance at deliverance will mean confronting the failures of his life, and revisiting the disturbing, unexplainable events of his youth.  It’s time to go back to the island; time to risk everything and right that first and most terrible wrong.

Bestselling Author Jack Singer Won’t Be Returning To South Africa | Novel Ideas

"I will never return to South Africa," says a defiant Singer. For a writer who built his literary career on the history of South Africa, it is something he is rarely asked about. I was talking to Jack socially one night, I wanted to ask him about his life growing up in one of the most volatile countries in the world. I asked him point blank:

“Why has nobody interviewed you about your life in South Africa”?

Jack didn’t know, and neither do I.

So, I wanted to do that. This interview is about a world we know little about. The racism, the unfair equality and the way normal South Africans dealt with the disgraceful treatment of their countrymen.

Guys like Jack fought back at the Apartheid without ever picking up a gun.

Vasile Iloveyou and Zoe Iloveyou

Were courting each other, comically under the lamp post of the platform

In a train station passed only by arrogant trains

At a speed that would look like a mere basalt-gray smear

The train tracks, twisted, alcoholic, not parallel enough

Were tearing slices from the soles of the tennis shoes,

He was reciting to her from the work of a failed poet, she was failing to listen to the poem

Twisting apparent locks of hair with her finger on the temple bent towards yesterday –

She was keeping there future secret memories, with betrayals and suspense

The air smelled of metallic imminence, something

Was about to happen, a sort of horizontal rain, reaching only the telegraph wires

And the wing of a bird flying away from the ignored poem

At a certain moment – as every moment is merely given and not pre-existent –

He kissed her, missing the mouth, on the corner of her polite, forced smile

Unannounced by signals, a train sprang from her mouth and hit his chin:

– I am pregnant…

The presumed father picked his teeth with the nail of his pinkie and bit into a phrase:

– And I said that I wouldn’t recite to you from anonymous poets anymore…

The G-spot of the story: Vasile Iloveyou is greasing the train tracks with tears of emotions

Zoe Iloveyou gathers train tracks from unwritten poems

All of the sudden, even though I had already announced you that something was about to happen

A vertical love train blows both of them away together with the train station –

Their love was like an express train

First and last in these parts

Basalt-grey goes good with red

Passed the time predicted, from the opposite side, came the baby who

Would become a famous poet

As famous as destiny, because the train is only the poem

The poet, a train station

The end of the story, the suspense and betrayals are anonymous, the chin

Keeps on reading

There are rain trains, there are round rains, there are train stations within the moment

And intentions

Still, basalt-grey with red will be forever, everywhere…. In fashion

If you understood the story, help birth the child…

In a train station passed only by arrogant trains

At a speed that would look like a mere basalt-gray smear

Just these lines are enough to make other poets weep.  The imagery is insane, incredible.

jacobsingerrBestselling South African writer Jacob Singer has finally released his brand new and totally FREE E-book!

The Vase with the Many Coloured Marbles has been available for sometime as a paperback and as a download… BUT NOW you can get your free sample copy off Amazon for nothing.

Jacob has been lauded as one of the most exciting writers to come out of South Africa.

Praise for “The Vase with the Many Coloured Marbles:

“Let me begin by saying this is not the kind of book I gravitate to. I read it out of curiosity after the many comments I read about it. But once I began I was completely drawn into the story.

The book spans the decades before and during the struggle to deal with apartheid in South Africa, up to recent years. Singer follows two female characters, a mother, Emma, and daughter Marla through Emma‘s early years, right into Marla’s adulthood, from the times of a racist country in the throes of Apartheid to the present struggle to rid itself of the lingering effects of that destructive policy. This is a book about politics, racism, and the struggle for equality. Yet it avoids the common pitfalls of focusing on the sensational aspects that so often show in acts of rage and violence. Rather, it stays inside the lives of two very `real’ people learning how to live in a segregated world without losing their dignity or becoming embroiled in violence. These are the stories we do NOT see in the news. And it is this approach that makes” The Vase With The Many Coloured Marbles” an engaging, thoughtful, often tender tale that draws the sympathetic reader in. At the same time it manages to educate the reader about life, politics, and the struggle for equality in South Africa. It teaches without preaching, speaks without orating, educates without becoming academic.”~ 5 Star Review

I am a Wrestler of the Muse.

My stories and characters are dark but never silenced.

I see ghosts and tell their tales. I look into the face of darkness where angels fear to tread.

I am a dark fiction writer with the heart of a poet and the soul of a gypsy while the ancient rhythms of Africa, the birthplace of storytellers, courses through my veins. Wanting to be either a pathologist or a criminal psychologist, life took me on a few twists and turns while studying journalism and after a couple of meandering offshoots that did not involve fiction, fiction finally chose me when I was asked to write a short story for a NZ anthology (which was a National Award Winner).

I now live on the beautiful East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island and I am lucky enough to call the Pacific Ocean my backyard. I can often be found wandering the cliff tops above the crashing ocean and walking through the lush farmlands that surround the area. But with a heart caught between two lands, the sunburned, ancient Africa and the lush, green islands of New Zealand, I find my true home within the white pages covered in ink. My fiction is caught between the dark and mysterious, the truth and the what ifs, secrets and reality, shadows and light.

I really do see ghosts and my loved ones believe ghosts and extreme weather phenomenon follow me around. I grew up spending holidays and weekends at my grandparents’ large old farm homestead which had a hidden wing that was haunted. These early experiences with haunted homes ignited my imagination and started a spark that made me question what else is out there that we couldn’t see, what is around us observing us? Why could I see these ghosts/spirits and many others couldn’t? The spark was lit and the stories started coming as fast as I could write them down and they still keep coming.

One of these real life experiences sparked The Redgates Secrets, my debut 6 part novella series.

(Who does not love miniature bite-size cakes? I can have more than just my “cake-singular” I can have cakes and not feel too guilty.)

Chocolate

(Make this rich, dark and bitter-sweet…and by the slab-ful.)

Wine

(It must be red…Don’t you know that Red makes writers write much faster?!)

For your safety and for this writer’s sanity, make sure all of these are always within my reach…

6.Hitchcock might have been on to something!

One of my fondest childhood memories is watching my younger cousin get attacked by a chicken. We were visiting his parent’s holiday house when we fell foul of the local rooster, a feathery behemoth with crazy eyes and spurs the size of a man’s thumb. The moment he saw us, he came steaming across the lawn, flapping and squawking like a banshee. We fled inside, breathless and laughing with terror. And that should have been the end of it.

But it wasn’t. Because we were boys. The door we fled into was the kitchen door. It had a large window set into it, and as we slammed it behind us, the rooster reared up against this, beating it with his wings and slashing it with his spurs. Excellent! We spent a happy afternoon seeing how close we could sneak up to the demented fowl, before rushing screaming back into the kitchen to watch him beat out his impotent rage against the window.

Soon!

Fabulous 50’s

Collect Experiences…not too many things

About

I’d like to invite you to follow my adventures as a “fifty-ish” baby boomer…I’m passionate about people, travel, nature, and photography! I’ve been blessed to experience some amazing adventures… hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, sleeping in the Jordan desert, spending the night on the Nile River, traveling down the Mekong River, skydiving….and lots more to share! My latest adventure was traveling overland camping through six countries in Africa!

I’m a Veteran having served in the U.S. Army for four years, stationed in Germany for the majority of that time. I have my B.A. in Business from University of Texas at Dallas and had a career in the hospitality industry as a Catering and Sales Manager. I have a 25 year old son on his own (mostly…at least not living with me)!

I’ve gone through many of life’s hurdles and have faced most of my fears. I hope to inspire people to take care of and empower themselves…through travel, photography, sports, hobbies…and to see the beauty that surrounds us!

Remember…don’t take yourself or life too seriously! Some parting photos…I like to pick up people. It started on my 1st honeymoon in Cancun in 1987…
