Getting Ready With Deborah – Turquoise and Nude Smokey Eye

Welcome to a New Friend | Deborah Says Beauty

Hello Lovelies!!!!

Many of you asked me to start doing makeup tutorials but since I’m very camera-shy I didn’t immediately jump on the YouTube wagon.

Last week I finally found the courage to get my camera and film myself while doing my makeup.
Bare with me though…since I don’t master the art of lighting and camera-settings yet (I’ll get there someday soon).

So without further ado…here’s my first makeup tutorial!
It’s a Turquoise and Nude smokey eye and rosy nude lip.

Please thumbs up (on here and on YouTube)  if you like it and want to see more…and don’t forget to subscribe!

These Are A Few of My Favorite Things

Burberry Spring 2013 Collection Review

Dear Reader,

This years Burberry show was such a splendid combination of all my favorite things: soft pastels, delicate lace, oversized coats, retro sunglasses, and polka dots polka dots polka dots.

I am such a fan of this puffy pink coat with its old-fashioned buttons and jutting-out pockets. It is an incarnation of luxury itself. A delightful embodiment of extravagance.

When I was in 6th grade I had to go to this thing called cotillion where I learned proper manners, ballroom dances, and how to politely consume a cookie. Restless 12-year-old that I was, I did not particularly look forward to spending my Friday nights learning how to dance the Swing with immature 6th grade boys. However, there was one part of cotillion that I absolutely adored: getting to wear fancy dresses and white satin gloves. So the reason I just told you all that information is because I once wore this pink lace dress to Cotillion that sort of reminds me of the one below.

The Good Curl |Welcome to a new Friend: Robin Josey

Fabulously Natural

via …my journey | The Good Curl.

…my journey

It’s not so much going natural, as it’s a RETURN.

I had previously worn my hair in different styles, but always relaxed. At its shortest, I relaxed the curls, but not all the way to keep my hair wavy. Lots of people liked my hair this way, and so did I. The funny thing, I thought my short, relaxed pixie was easier to manage and looked better than my actual natural curls.

Then, as it always does, life decides to throw you a sinking fastball.

In 2011, I was in a car accident that made it impossible to do anything, but sit and lay down, let alone do anything to my hair. I had already grown it longer, but it was still relaxed. At least when it was shorter, it was still curly. The bob I had at the time, was not as forgiving.  So as soon as I was given the all clear from the doctor, I decided that I would stop relaxing my hair.

And thus began my love affair with all the naturals that I have followed on YouTube. I also relied on my sister who has been natural for over 20 years. It’s been a dizzying experience. Going from relaxing my hair and having all these options I thought I had, to embracing my natural texture and realizing, that the options are really that much more once I decided to love what my hair can really do when it’s healthy.

Along the way, there have been many setbacks: breakage, TWA regret and angst, why won’t my hair grow frustration. But all of it has been informative, and led me to my blog, and what you’re reading today.

This page is dedicated to my continuing journey, and incorporates my makeup enthusiasm, and love for fashion and accessories. It includes whatever’s on my mind as well. I mean, yeah, I’m here for the hair, but let’s be real, we want to chop it up every now and then with some fun, and thought-provoking stuff on occasion.

Where else am I around the web: Just click on the icons at the upper right of the screen for where you would like to follow my journey. And thanks for coming along.

Is the answer to this question a simple one? Or, is it steeped in something deeper, such as the history of slavery in the country, exhibition, or invasion of personal space.

I think there exists a true historical aspect to why this is so sensitive a subject. The very real aspect is the slavery issue where black people were put on display before being sold. Teeth were examined, musculature too. And if you’re not familar with Sarah Baartman, you should be, as her story is intriguing and sad.

Baartman, also known as the Hottentot Venus, was a freak show display in Great Britain in the 1800’s because her large cheeks and elongated labia were intriguing to the white men who paid thousands of dollars to watch her walk around a small cage. Even after her death, she was still a major attraction. Her remains were included in a French museum for white men, and black to goggle and admire.

Now, I don’t think having an event where people can come and touch your hair is akin to Sarah’s life of degradation at all. In, fact, they are not similar at all in my humble opinion. She was put in a cage, bought and sold and then after she died, further humiliated by having her publicly displayed again and again. Seen as an oddity, a sexual being only, and not treated as the woman she was. Her hair was not at issue. And far more people need to be outraged over the similarities between her and Nikki Minaj, lil Kim and Foxy Brown. (I’m dating myself with those last two, but it’s still relevant)

No, we are not on display. I can even undertsand why people would not want to be touched. But the responses are just ridiculous.

A simple no will do. Why must the response be one that almost boasts physical violence?

I’ve been told that I don’t take it seriously enough, that I need to be more militant, that I don’t understand how offensive the question is.

Excuse me? Having someone ask to touch my hair and saying yes means I’m not adequately in touch with my blackness?

I’m 46 years old, and I’ve been black for every one of those years. I’ve been called the ‘n’ word, more times than I care to remember. I think I’m well aware how black I am. I’ve been reminded everytime I look in the mirror.

It’s ridiculous to even argue about it. I think that people ask because they’re genuinely curious. I mean at least they ask. Yes, I know there are those that don’t, and there should be a different kind of response for unwelcome touching of my hair, or Amy part or my person. But I’m not going to threaten them with amputation, or my foot in their neck.

Why can’t we use the opportunity to teach someone? Or simply say, “thank you, but I’d rather you didn’t.” You’d be surprised the response you get.

I’ve had people say, it’s just so pretty and looks so soft. How do you get it to look like that. And because I wear it in twist outs a lot, I can see why I’d get that question. And I answer.

And these are from non black people.

I get more side eye, jealous stares and whispers from my kinky sisters than anyone else.

Real. Talk.

Seriously, just a simple no thank you answers the question. I realize it’s supposed to be humorous, but it’s not. And we need to do better.

I wonder if President Obama wanted to karate chop this kid in the clavicle.

And how many of us Oooooooh’d and aaaaaahd’d over this picture.

See we can’t pick one or the other. Either everyone can, or no one can.

Ya dig?

Join the discussion.

By the way, yes you can.

NYFW Show Review: Moschino

Dear Reader,

SO. Long time no talk. I got sick so I really didn’t feel like doing much all of last week. I’m feeling so much better today though, and I even wrote a little post schedule for my blog, so now I will be uploading articles more regularly. I also watched New York  Fashion Week Spring 2014 on my computer every day after school last week and am so excited to write about it. I have decided to begin my (lets be honest here these will all be) rants about NYFW today with the Moschino line, one of my favorites this year. May the ranting commence!

ImageOk these first two looks are such a masterful blend of hard and soft, of gold chains and frilly ruffles. I can’t help falling in love with the Black/White Swan feel to these garments. Also, I find it so interesting how both models are wearing completely different pieces yet at the same time the looks are coherent.

ImageThese models remind me of very well-dressed french policemen. I think its the hat. Yes its the hat. Also the chains just kill me. In a good way.

Fear Not I Am Still Alive

Dear Reader,

Ok sorry for not writing for a while, but I have been busy moving to France. I will now proceed to tell you about how that has been. Holy moly. I have no other words to describe my feelings right now. Holy moly. Everything is just ever so exciting and it is so beautiful here. After meeting my new classmates in Boston, I flew to France and moved into my new host family’s house. My family is so kind and they made me crepes on Saturday with lemon juice and sugar, so I mean what’s not to love.

This past week its been all orientation at my American school and guess what I made a friend today. Her name is Sydney and she lives in New York. I want to live there one day, so its nice to hear about it.  After school, we walked to the bakery down the street from our school and ate croissants. It was a pretty good day. I also ran by the canal by my house. There are lily pads and flowers and trees everywhere its the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. My life is temporarily perfect. And it will be until Thursday because that’s when classes actually start and I will have to do homework bleh. I also forgot to mention that a lot of my classmates are interested in fashion. I’m kind of scared to tell them about this blog though because I’m worried they might think its strange or something. I know I shouldn’t care what other people think about me but I do. I’ll tell them all eventually and maybe some people would want to take pictures with me who knows. Ok wow I just reread this article and it sounds like some sort of awkward diary entry. I’m aware. I’m a nerd.

Work Of Art | Catching up with A Stairway To Fashion

Märta Mattsson’s Butterflies And Insects-

Butterflies, beetles and frightening and bizarre insects become works of art in the creations of young Swedish designer Märta Mattsson.

Märta Mattsson has always been able to see and create “beauty” from what others would consider frightening or even repulsive. Today she is considered a rising star in the world of contemporary jewelry. Born in Stockholm, Märta traveled a lot for her studies with experiences in Tokyo, the United States and the Royal College of Art in London. Her jewels, which feature beetles, butterflies and insects with colorful wings, are absolute expressions of her many experiences and her memories of childhood afternoons spent playing with insects and all different types of stuffed animals, and the effect this had on her creative sensibility.

Märta Mattsson got her BA from HDK – School of Design and Crafts Jewelry Art in Gothenburg. During university, she did exchanges in Providence, Rhode Island, and Tokyo where she took courses at the Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry. Here her creations were described by classmates as “KimoKawaii”, a combination of the words kawaii (gracious) and kimoi (disgusting). Since 2007, her works have been shown at various trade fairs and during solo shows. In 2012, her “Fossil” collection won the Talent Prize in Munich, which catapulted her to the top of the list of promising young stars in jewelry.

Märta Mattsson

Märta Mattsson

She is fascinated by things that people are scared of but at the same time can’t help staring at. Märta says that her jewels come about out of this tension between attraction and repulsion. Scary insects, beetles, moths and butterflies are lacquered and then trapped in elegant enclosures, cut, glued and adorned with cubic zirconia before being turned into brooches and necklaces, familiar objects that are shining and extraordinary.

In the  “Fossils”, “Beetle”, “Rebirth/Skin” and “Wallpaper” collections, these repulsive creatures are reinterpreted into things that become fascinating and charming to look at. These bizarre insects are immobile in their magnificent mounts created by the imaginative young designer. They shine with new life becoming ornaments and jewels able to evoke that amazement and attraction toward the things that scare us.

A Stairway To Fashion

What really is fashion?

Well…..i think that through fashion we give a definite shape of what we are, it reflects our  personality and character, it influents our mood and gives form of our feelings.

Discovering fashion helps finding out what your style is, and thats what is all about! Style! Style makes us unique. In the end fashion is what suites you better, what gives you confidence, what makes you feel beautiful and happy – a way of life, at a given time.

No need of being a slave of trends but finding your path in a world where “different” is awesome, and fashion gives you the means to do whatever you want, to use your imagination as you please, a place where dreams and creation meet.

It’s about finding your genuine uniqueness, no matter where you are coming from and where you are going to, no matter what you do for a living or the age!

Just discover yourselves! Let’s do that together!

My best thoughts for you guys,

Raluca Stoica

Summer Comes To An End

As i woke up this morning and gazed  out of my window i saw tiny raindrops falling down on the roofs in a shy attempt to let us know that autumn is here. The city is still half asleep, trams are taking their courses clanking lazy on the streets that all of a sudden look different, cabs are waiting silently for the  hasty clients, threatening clouds are crowding to cover the city and there is the almost imperceptible wind, yet strong enough to shake down the dead leafs. I hit my rumbling coffee maker and the familiar sound is music to my ears, nothing like the smell of freshly made coffee in the morning and a delicious full of calories chocolate muffin that im planning to work of at my Pilates course later on, but then again it is weekend, the last summer weekend and i intend to enjoy it as much as i can. As i grab a satisfied bite, put on a casual light cardigan, rain stops and sun invades my house, but  its power is diminished, the light is different and those clouds don’t look like they want to go away. Well, autumn is here alright, nature is showing it and i didn’t realize the change until this particular morning. I’m ok with that. After all, seasons change. So do cities. People come into your life and people go. For most of us holidays are over, for others they just begin. New York in autumn is the perfect break, is at its best during the cool crisp days of autumn. Nowhere else will you have more fun in autumn, there is so much to look at, even when you are just taking a walk down a residential block, or Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue or Broadway, in a comfortable pair of shoes and simply sightseeing. Besides, the city hosts the most irresistible events and exhibitions now than at any other time of year.

Central Park In Autumn

Central Park In Autumn

Japan also draws a large number of travelers to “famous koyo spots” both in the mountains and in the cities. Each year, starting mid September, the “koyo front” slowly moves from the northern island of Hokkaido until it reaches the lower elevations of central and southern Japan towards the end of November. Some trees around Tokyo and Kyoto stay colorful into early December. The Japanese autumn is what cherry blossoms are to spring.

NY Fashion Week: Amish Metrosexual

New York Fashion Week just ended…time to reflect.

Were women’s trends more exciting or men’s ?

While womens’ fashion is always full of new ideas that might become a trend,  I thought the coolest trend was in the menswear –The bare feet, no socks trend  with noticeably shorter pants. As my friend labeled it the Metrosexual Amish look.FRANK AND OAK_130908_5922Edit

I feel he has all the rights to label this trend since he was one of the pioneers who originated this trend by being very tall & living in a one of the California’s Surf towns ( so all ready-to-wear pants are short on him and he hates socks ) . So even though he has to wear suit to work everyday he courageously omits his socks. Coworkers call his style Amish , I call it metrosexual, he calls it  Amish Metrosexual. I feel it perfectly reflects the essence of trend!

The apparent enthusiasm with which men embraced this trend makes me think of women during the roaring 20es, when they could wear short skirts and show their legs.

Does this trend brings the same sense of Liberation for men ?

Hi, I’m Mary. This blog has become my personal obsession, and if you like it even a fraction as much as I do, I’ll be delighted! Got something to say? Get in touch!

We Heart Vintage is about my three favourite things, vintage fashion, photography and cinema.  I’m a sixties child at heart, but also adore the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 70s. I haven’t managed to re-embrace the 80s yet, my teenage memories of batwing jumpers and blue mascara are just too fresh.

When in doubt I ask myself ‘What would Deborah Kerr do…?” (something stylish no doubt – she seemed to cope beautifully with any social situation)
