Amazon Offers All-You-Can-Eat Books. Authors Turn Up Noses.
By DAVID STREITFELDDEC. 27, 2014
Authors are upset with Amazon. Again.
For much of the last year, mainstream novelists were furious that Amazon was discouraging the sale of some titles in its confrontation with the publisher Hachette over e-books.
Now self-published writers, who owe much of their audience to the retailer’s publishing platform, are unhappy.
One problem is too much competition. But a new complaint is about Kindle Unlimited, a new Amazon subscription service that offers access to 700,000 books — both self-published and traditionally published — for $9.99 a month.
It may bring in readers, but the writers say they earn less. And in interviews and online forums, they have voiced their complaints.
“Six months ago people were quitting their day job, convinced they could make a career out of writing,” said Bob Mayer, an e-book consultant and publisher who has written 50 books. “Now people are having to go back to that job or are scraping to get by. That’s how quickly things have changed.”
For romance and mystery novelists who embraced digital technology, loved chatting up their fans and wrote really, really fast, the last few years have been a golden age. Fiction underwent a boom unseen since the postwar era, when seemingly every liberal arts major set his sights on the Great American Novel.
Now, though, the world has more stories than it needs or wants to pay for. In 2010, Amazon had 600,000 e-books in its Kindle store. Today it has more than three million. The number of books on Smashwords, which distributes self-published writers, grew 20 percent last year. The number of free books rose by one-third.
Revenue from e-books leveled off in 2013 at $3 billion after increasing nearly 50 percent in 2012, according to BookStats. But Kindle Unlimited is making the glut worse, some writers say.
The program has the same all-you-can-eat business model as Spotify in music, Netflix in video and the book start-ups Oyster and Scribd. Consumers feast on these services, which can offer new artists a wider audience than they ever could have found before the digital era.

Here’s an excerpt:
The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 27,000 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 10 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.
Yellowstone Supervolcano Eruption Would Doom the United States
Melted roads, the strongest earthquake in more than 30 years, spiking gas emissions from hot springs, animals purportedly “fleeing” the park’s boundaries — all those events must be signs that the supervolcano lying dormant beneath Yellowstone National Park is poised for the first eruption in 70,000 years, right?
I started to read Dashiell Hammett to improve my own mystery writing.
It almost made me give up.
She’s write, you know., RIGHT. sorry.
An old, and wise, friend
About the size of a pack of poker cards. Lightweight and functional, stores 1 Terabyte of data; I can back up my entire hard drive and that of my wife onto one little box.
Unfortunately, the WD SmartWare (which should be called something more obscene and less family-friendly) is the abomination of desolation.
The thing refuses to back up my large files, despite upgrading to the latest version (2.4.6); worse than that, there are processes running in the background – specifically WDBackupEngine.exe, but others as well – that will not die, can’t be killed, and consume so many resources that my greased-lightning core i7 box slows down to the speed of London traffic.
The WD forums are full of complaints about this issue going back to 2011. Western Digital has not provided a workable solution, and the fact that their latest software has not solved the issue points to…

Another construction site pumping out noise and dust.
SITES AND AIMS: Not much noise and dust was pumped out of this construction site in 2010. The year sure didn’t go down like it looked like it would. It started with a first online publication in January followed by a second one in February. Seemed like the beginning of a roll. But I changed jobs and there was only time to work at staying ahead of the work. And yet, it’s been the most rewarding year. So for 2011, I’ll order up some more of that. And I’ll write stories when I can because it’s thrill.
Happy New Year!
A BIT ABOUT ME: I was raised in the USA, in New England, with dreams of big cities and Dixie, of salt water and beaches. So I hit the bottom of the Bible Belt and ended up spending the majority of my years there working up a sweat—working menial jobs, working out, working on a college degree, and finally, working a big fat telecom career. Now I’m back, way high up north, because I need to be close to the border.
“I found myself on the other side of the door and at the top of a precipice.
Now I find myself at the beginning of the story. The destruction is all I can see. The destruction would be the end of the story, but in reality, it’s just the beginning.
Here’s the rest of my story…”
Mark Gardner, September 26, 2014
The Beginnings Project came about from Mark Gardner’s desire to try his hand at stream of consciousness writing, not with ink on paper as Laurence Sterne did in the 1700’s, but with an old typewriter, as James Joyce and other modernist novelists have done using that narrative mode.
Using an old typewriter can mean everything from simply connecting with a writing device of old—and any number of connotations that may accompany—to attributing mystical properties to it that allow for the release of stories pent up within it.
Yes, Gardner’s got a great voice and style but what if it was the typing of “Beginnings” on an old 1949 Remington Quiet-Riter that made it everything from merely special to something akin to Aladdin’s lamp?
What it is
A collaborative writing project that began fortuitously and is perpetuated haphazardly.

How Sony Turned ‘Annie’ Into a Surveillance Monster
While Sony Pictures has recently come under attack for its decision to pull the widely-panned up-coming movie ‘The Interview’ after yet another massive hacking incident and legal demands to Twitter to remove leaked emails , there’s another reason to revile in horror: the re-make of the movie ‘Annie’ is a civil liberties nightmare.
But hey, just how bad can a remake of a beloved childhood cinematic masterpiece actually get?
Bad. Very, very bad.
It isn’t just that the music is crap. It isn’t just that the lines are laboured and seemed to invite eye-rolling, even from the cast who know they had a dud on their hands. No, modern-day ‘Annie’ should be reviled for far darker reasons: it’s a cheerleader for warrantless surveillance, packaged up for primary-schoolers.
Obara Sand is the bastard daughter of Prince Oberyn Martell and an Oldtown whore but is also the eldest of the renowned Sand Snakes. She is a tetchy, hot-tempered woman who wants vengence for her father through warfare on the Lannisters. She thinks herself to be a warrior.
“Give me back my spear, Uncle. Cersei sent us a head. We should send her back a bag of them.” Obara Sand to Doran Martell
Her weapons of choice are a spear, a whip, and a round shield of steel and copper. She has a fondness of wine and is a bold, sure rider who uses spurs, using them so often that the animal’s flesh is punctured and is bloody. She is a big-boned woman who is nearly thirty years of age with long legs and close-set eyes with brown hair.
When Oberyn came to claim her, her mother did not…

Sarasota, Florida not only has beautiful beaches, it is also home to Ca’ d’Zan, meaning “House of John”, a Venetian-style mansion built-in the 1920s by John Ringling, of the Ringling Brothers Circus, and his wife, Mable. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and Circus Museums are also located on the 20 acre waterfront property. My friend Deanna and I drove 45 minutes North of Cape Coral to explore the complex.
The massive terrace has gorgeous views of the water…
I should begin at the beginning of our day. Our agenda included a brief stop at one of Florida’s most beautiful beaches…Siesta Key. Walking barefoot along the wide white sandy beach our feet were cold in the morning sand.
Now…we’re back at the Ringling complex. Walking the grounds, we came upon a playground and I captured Deanna having a bit of fun on the slide…
The gardens are filled…
