When Daft Punk’s much-anticipated “Random Access Memories” dropped in May, many longtime fans were feeling at least a bit underwhelmed when the album turned out to be more funk than the much more electronic sounds of the “Homework” days. But the synth sounds of “The Bones Of What You Believe” should prove to be a sound for sore ears for anyone searching for something more in the electro-pop scene.
Merely listening to a recording you may not realize, but the scottish synthpop band, Chvrches does not employ a traditional drummer in the band. Martin Doherty uses samplers and drum machines to create what you could call an authentic 80’s pop sound. The crunchy synthesizer sounds of Lauren Mayberry and Iain Cook are aggressive and unapologetic which contrasts well with Mayberry’s pure, vibrato-less voice.
When you first hear the way Mayberry uses her voice it reminds you in a way of Cyndi Lauper on “Time After Time”. Not planning on a career in music, Mayberry carries a master’s degree in journalism, but what some could say is a lack of voice training, actually gives her voice a simple, honest, and yet captivating indie folk sound. When you hear Mayberry and Cook together on “Under The Tide” it takes you back to the nearly historic indie rock moment when Martha Wainwright teamed up with Snow Patrol for “Set The Fire To The Third Bar”.
The sounds of “The Bones Of What You Believe” are an immediate joy especially for anyone with a taste for electronic indie pop. Chvrches delivers something nostalgic but fresh in a genre where so many of our longtime favorite artists seem to be trying but floundering.
