Smashwords — The Unemployed Guy’s Guide To Unemployment — A book by Mike Mauss

The author is out of work now and has been unemployed 9 out of the past 20 years so The Unemployed Guy’s Guide tells you the secrets the ‘experts’ don’t know: that online ads, cover letters, and job boards are worthless, there is only one way to find a good job, and how to survive the firing, stay sane, live without money, and come out with pride, family, and finances intact.

Apocalypse in New Orleans  | American Journalism Review

The Saturday after Hurricane Katrina drowned my city, I sat alone in a rented Jeep in front of the latest headquarters of the Times-Picayune’s “New Orleans bureau” – our fifth in as many days – pounding furiously on a laptop, taking belts of Johnnie Walker Red to beat back tears. I was locked out of the staff’s Uptown house, awaiting the return of the tiny team of colleagues that now represented the entirety of the paper’s presence in the city we once dominated. On the advice of cops who warned us they couldn’t patrol the area – and to forget 911 – we’d arranged for a shotgun and two .357 revolvers that would arrive before nightfall.

As I typed, I struggled desperately to do justice to the scene I’d witnessed that morning, amid a mass of refugees at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, one that had laid bare the beauty and the horror of mankind and reduced me to a sobbing wreck.

A story of long ago

A Story of Long Ago
My daughter, who is directing all the volunteers at this year’s Official Inaugural Balls (and is herself a volunteer) is in crisis because she needs to rent formal gown(s) to allow her to work on Monday Night. Apparently the only place to rent women’s formal wear is now Rent The Runway.
This triggered a memory of doing a story with Steve Bell for Good Morning America’s 1976 coverage of Jimmy Carter’s Inaugural. We went to an ageless rental place down on F St – I can’t remember the name now – and shot Steve in the mirror as various pieces of tuxedo appeared on him (including a top hat).
I was more interested in the constant stream of stone-faced young women who would stamp in – clearly irritated – and then try on various rental gowns and stamp out again. It wasn’t until a few came in in their DC Police uniforms that I realized that these were the police and Secret Service women who would be guarding the balls. The contrast between the tough and intimidating women who walked in and…well, the tough and irritated women who were looking in the mirror at their pastel chiffon clouds was fascinating.
Once I’d figured out what was going on, I noticed a number of conversations with the tailor that involved tugging at the dress in the shoulders. One of the salesmen informed me that they were discussing whether the dress would still allow a quick draw from their shoulder holster.
I don’t suppose Security has to wear tuxedos and/or gowns any more. I know that cameraMEN and soundMEN used to have to appear in full tux to work at the Inaugural balls; any women remember if the few female shooters had to operate their cameras in haute couture? ( say “few” because this was 1976 after all)

Courier – A Political Motorcycle Thriller

“If the phrase ‘a crackling good yarn’ evokes an era before Twitter, Facebook, cell phones, videotape, DVDs or cable television, welcome to Terry Irving’s fast-paced thriller from a bygone age. The Vietnam War is winding down; a wounded vet takes a job as a motorcycle courier at a network’s Washington news bureau, and finds himself caught up in the backwash of a harrowing conspiracy. Terry Irving knows the landscape. I was there. So was he.”

—Nightline Anchor Ted Koppel

In his daily rounds as a Washington motorcycle courier, burned-out Vietnam veteran Rick Putnam has found the perfect way to chase away the images of war that haunt his dreams and lurk behind every moment of his waking life.. He harnesses the speed of his beloved BMW. However, when he suddenly becomes the target in a lethal pursuit, he has to push it past the red line to find out just who is trying to kill him—and why.

The year is 1972 in Washington, DC, a hotbed of government secrets and fractured souls, as the Watergate Scandal heats up and the Vietnam War simply won’t end. One day during his courier gig, Rick picks up a roll of news film that is damning proof that Richard Nixon took money from the South Vietnamese to prolong the war. This is evidence of High Treason: a transgression that would mean not only impeachment but lifelong disgrace – a disgrace the President would resign to avoid.

To suppress the evidence, a rogue CIA agent, a beautiful Korean assassin, and two Saigon cowboys are sent to  recover the film and ensure Rick’s silence – permanently. Rick fights back with the assistance of some of the world’s first computer hackers, two brave congressional staffers, and a motorcycle gang leader who fought by his side in Vietnam’s toughest battle. In the middle of it all, Rick falls in love with Eve Buffalo Calf, a petite, longhaired law student from the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, who is in DC to defend radical members of the American Indian Movement. Can she heal Rick – banish the  memories of war that haunt his every hour?  As their relationship deepens, Rick finds his long hardened heart slowly awakening.

Courier is the high-velocity thriller by veteran Washington journalist Terry Irving that slashes through the darkness at the heart of our nation’s capital.  With its white-knuckle pace and absorbing intrigue, Courier is a heart-pumping, riveting read full of high menace, hot motorcycles, and the Capital’s own brand of mayhem—the kind you never read about on the front page.. It’s a must for anyone who likes their thrillers real, their characters complex and their motorcycles at breakneck speed.
